REPOINTING RIDGE CAPPING
Repointing ridge capping and roof hips, refers to the top of the roof and the joins where the tiles meet.
Where the tiles from one section of the roof meet up with another, requires a special covering tiles, called a capping tile. This is to cover the gap between the roof pitch on one side, with the roof pitch of the other. The place where the two roof pitches meet or roofing section,s is where water leaks are likely to occur. Storms tend to blow rain in from the South West or North West as a general rule in the Perth metro area. Should the house roof be in need of repointing ridge capping then the water is probably going to come in at these places.
Tiles and ridge cap and hip tiles are prone to getting damaged and broken over time – usually 20 years is a normal roof life span. The roof frame like the jarrah rafters and purlins are not part of the outer roof facing the elements each day. The harsh sun for 9 months of the year followed by colder wet and story weather causes the damage to your roof.
Many people do not actually get on the top of the roof to see the damage up there and thus don’t realise how bad it can be until they are finding leaks showing up on the ceiling.
Sun, wind and rain on the roof of your home over 15-20 plus years, means you will certainly have a need to at least re-point the ridge capping and hips, replace a few tiles and adjust a few others and that may be all that is needed, to last you another 10 years of trouble free living.
